How does marijuana help Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia (or Fibromyalgia Syndrome) is a medically-recognized condition about which relatively little is known.  It has been observed that Fibromyalgia tends to be triggered by a stressful event, even if it's a positive one such as giving birth.  Mental symptoms include fatigue, insomnia and difficulty focusing. Physical symptoms include stiffness, headaches and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Also people suffering from Fibromyalgia tend to experience increased sensitivity to pain.

How does medical marijuana help Fibromyalgia?

Sadly, there is currently no cure for Fibromyalgia and no evidence that medical marijuana can help reverse the condition.  There is evidence that medical marijuana can effectively treat the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, thereby bringing welcome relief to those who suffer from it.

The growing trend towards the legalization of marijuana has made it much easier to study it scientifically. There has been particular interest in marijuana’s effectivenes for the treatment of pain, having been driven by the opiate-addiction epidemic in the U.S.A. and elsewhere.

Marijuana for Fibromyalgia

It has been noted that U.S. states where medical marijuana is legal, have lower rates of opiate overdoses than those where it is not.  While this is not proof of a connection, separate studies in Canada and New Mexico showed that marijuana was an effective alternative to prescription pain relief.  The Canadian study looked at a broader range of prescription medications than the New Mexico study, which looked purely at cannabis versus opiates. Marijuana provides pain relief for multiple health conditions and can do just the same for Fibromyalgia.

Best medical marijuana strains for Fibromyalgia.

Ultimately, your choice of medical marijuana strain will depend on personal preference. However, here are five we’d definitely suggest you consider.  We’ve based our choices on medical uses and partly on ease of growth. As all of these strains are available in autoflowering versions and even the photoperiod versions, should be a feasible option for cannabis beginners.

Grandaddy Purple aka Grandaddy Purps.

One of the cruellest twists of Fibromyalgia is that it induces both fatigue and insomnia. As we all know, lack of sleep can lead to a tough day even for a healthy person.  It's even worse if you're battling a condition like Fibromyalgia.  Grandaddy Purps is one of the most popular insomnia treatments around, plus it's great for pain relief. It also helps to put you in a more positive frame of mind.  To top it all off, this is one great-tasting cannabis strain.

Girl Scout Cookies.

After you've woken from a good night's sleep, you may need a bit of help to wake and bake. The aroma of Girl Scout Cookies might just do you some good on its own and if not there's plenty of THC to recharge your energy levels. Girl Scout Cookies is a great strain for all kinds of pain.  As an added bonus, it really does taste like thin mint cookies.

Blue Dream.

Blue Dream is one of those all-round cannabis strains, which many people choose as their go-to daytime medication. It's strong enough to deal with physical pain and pull you out of even a suffocatingly dark and dense mental fog. But light enough not to leave you incapable of any sort of meaningful function for hours on end.  It probably helps that many people love the fruity taste and smell.

Blueberry is the same sort of idea as Blue Dream, in fact it was one of the parent strains.  The big difference is that Blue Dream is a Sativa-dominant hybrid, whereas Blueberry is an Indica-dominant hybrid.  In practical terms this means not only that there is less THC but also that the high it produces is much more laid back and mellow.  With a good amount of CBD content giving you a deep stone, we’d suggest this strain for evening use. But we think it would be feasible to use it in the daytime just as long as you leave yourself plenty of time to recover.

Critical Mass.

Critical Mass is the strain to use in the evenings when your priority is just keeping your symptoms at bay.  There's lots and lots of lovely CBD for long-term pain relief and relaxation.  Critical Mass is also highly-recommended for stress, depression and insomnia.  This is the one skunk-based strain on our list and it has sweet earthiness and fresh citrus to balance it.

If none of these cannabis strains sound good to you, then you don't need to worry. There are plenty of other options available, strains which are also very good, but, for various reasons, didn't make it into our list, include: Harlequin, Cannatonic, Tahoe OG, Bubba Kush and Headband Kush.  There are plenty more, but you do have to realise that some cannabis strains can be medically effective and very tasty, but hard to obtain and/or challenging to grow.  Gorilla Glue, for example, has lots of THC for positivity and pain relief, but she is a big, strong, quite demanding girl and might be a bit much for a beginner to handle.
