How Medical Marijuana can Help with Muscle and Joint Pain

Originally posted on 6th August 2018, Updated on 29th January 2019

Muscle and joint pain can be debilitating for those that suffer from it. Joint pain can make it extremely taxing for someone to do something as simple as lift a coffee mug. On the other hand, muscle pain can make it difficult for a person to perform daily functions such as simply walking, or even lying down. Conventional medications don’t always help with the symptoms people experience with this type of pain. And some, such as opioids, can even cause a dependency.

So what’s the answer for people suffering from joint and muscle pain? Research shows that it might just be medical marijuana.

How does marijuana help muscle and joint pain?

As medicinal marijuana has become more popular in recent years, more research is being done on how it can effectively help with certain conditions. Pain in the joints and muscles is just one of them, but the research is there.

In 2014 a study was done at the University of South Carolina. This research showed that THC, one of the most important cannabinoids found in marijuana, can help limit the immune response that causes muscle and joint pain. It does this mainly by lowering inflammation that can cause sore muscles and pain in the joints. Caused by conditions such as lupus and arthritis.

Another study in 2015 found that CBD, the other main cannabinoid in marijuana, also helps with joint and muscle pain. CBD, like THC, was also found in this study to help lower inflammation, bringing relief to patients with this type of chronic pain. The benefit of CBD for many is that it does not bring side effects like its psychoactive counterpart, THC.  Furthermore, unlike opioids, which are known to be extremely addictive, marijuana is much less likely to create a dependency issue.  In fact, marijuana is now being used to treat opioid addiction.

While lupus and arthritis may be the first conditions that come to mind upon hearing about joint pain, there are a number of others as well. These include:

  • Bursitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Runner’s knee
  • Tendinitis
  • Infection of the bones
  • Gout and CPPD arthritis caused by crystals forming in the joint
  • Broken bones and fractures
  • Infection of the joints, also known as septic arthritis
  • Infections caused by viruses
  • Overexertion of certain joints
  • Sprains and strains, particularly in the joints

Medical marijuana has been found to effectively treat all of these conditions. Allowing patients to get on with their lives and easily perform the functions they once found difficult.

Best strains for muscle and joint pain

Once patients understand just how helpful medical marijuana can be for their joint and muscle pain. They then just need to find the strain that’s right for them. Each strain of marijuana is bred to have different effects and it’s important patients become familiar with them first.

Some indica heavy strains for example, will leave a person wanting to simply lie on the couch or sleep. This can make it difficult for those that have to work throughout the day. On the other hand, those who have trouble sleeping due to their joint pain may prefer indica strains over sativas. Which can leave a person feeling happy, but too active to sleep. So which strains are best?

Blueberry Pancakes

Blueberry Pancakes is a popular strain for those that suffer from joint pain and find it difficult to relax. While it can bring a euphoric feeling, this is felt more as a body buzz. Rather than the cerebral high sativas will bring. With that body buzz comes a complete feeling of relaxation. This allows sufferers to experience pain relief throughout their entire body and be lulled into a deep sleep. The Blueberry Pancakes strain has also been known to relieve nausea, something that many with chronic pain also experience.

Another indica strain that can provide many of the same effects as Blueberry Pancakes is Gorilla Glue. This strain will relieve all types of pain, including joint and muscle pain. Also any other painful area of the body. With a feeling of deep relaxation this strain is best used in the evening, or after a long day of work. However, it won’t bring the knockout punch that Blueberry Pancakes does. This is due to the fact that Gorilla Glue #4 is a hybrid strain, with strong sativa roots as well.

Critical Mass

Critical Mass, a powerful indica strain, can help deal with all symptoms, including the pain. While Critical Mass is known to be mood-boosting and lift a person’s spirits, it is still indica dominant. This means that it can cause couch lock. Which is why it may be best for patients that don’t have to go to work, or accomplish any tasks throughout the day.

So what’s the answer for those that suffer from muscle and joint pain, but still need the energy to go to work and run errands during the day? For those, the Harlequin strain may be the perfect fit. Harlequin isn’t just energizing and uplifting, giving patients the energy they need to get on with their day. It also has a high CBD content and low THC content. This means that it’s a more medicinal strain than psychoactive strain. Making it great for those that need the pain relief, but still need to keep their wits about them.

Ghost Train Haze

Ghost Train Haze is another popular option and has a much higher level of THC than Harlequin. The potency of Ghost Train Haze may make it unsuitable for those that need to complex tasks, like drive around. Also due to the high THC content, this strain is not recommended for those that suffer from anxiety. As it can increase these feelings. For those that aren’t worried about the psychoactive effects, Ghost Train Haze can not only help with joint pain, but also depression and loss of appetite.

Muscle and joint pain can truly be debilitating. It can keep people from going to work, performing everyday functions, and even getting out of bed. In addition, it can also be accompanied by many other symptoms such as depression and anxiety. While conventional medicine such as opioids has been found to be ineffective and also much riskier, medicinal marijuana can be a great help. Patients just need to find a strain that works for them, and that let’s them go about their lives.
