How Medical Marijuana can help with PTSD

Originally posted on 2nd August 2018, Updated on 25th January 2019

Those who have survived traumatic events know just how devastating it can be. But some who manage to live through it quickly find that the memory of it doesn’t go away as soon as it’s over. These people often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder also know as PTSD. This can make it difficult for people to go back to their normal lives and perform everyday functions. Such as going to work. Now however, new research has shown that those suffering from the condition have new hope in the form of medical marijuana.

What is PTSD?

PTSD is a mental health condition that people can sometimes develop after a traumatic and life-altering event. Going into combat is one of the most common reasons a person experiences PTSD. But any traumatic event can trigger it. Natural disasters, car accidents, and sexual assault have all been said to lead to the condition in those that experience it. While not everyone that faces traumatic events will get the condition, many will.

In fact, data shows that about 8 percent of the world’s population will experience the condition at some point in their lives. Women are far more likely to experience it, with about 10.4 percent of women being affected by it. Conversely, only about 5 percent of men will ever be treated for the disorder.

Medical Marijuana for PTSD

PTSD comes with many different symptoms, and some of them can be debilitating. Those suffering from it can experience flashbacks, either during their waking hours, or in the form of nightmares. These flashbacks can actually cause a person to feel as though they’re reliving the horrific event that caused the disorder in the first place.

It can often be difficult for those suffering from the disorder to ever really feel happy and like themselves again. They may try to avoid situations that remind them of the event. After a car accident, a person may refuse to get into a car again. Essentially making their life much more difficult.

Others may start to stay closer to home  because they now think the world is a dangerous place. Those thoughts alone can keep a person from enjoying life. In certain situations such as combat, during which someone lost a close friend, people can feel shame or guilt. This can keep them withdrawn and also prevent them from being happy.

Another key symptom of PTSD is that it can make a person feeling jittery, constantly on alert and looking for danger. This can make it hard to concentrate or sleep. Also often causing anxiety so the person becomes startled easily. With many turning to alcohol or smoking, in order to help relieve their stress. Or getting addicted to current pharmaceutical drugs prescribed to them.

However, there is a form of medication that can help with little to no side effects. It’s medical marijuana.

How does marijuana help PTSD?

Other than general antidepressants, there is no real medication available specifically to treat PTSD. At least not in the way of pharmaceuticals. A lot of research has been done on how medical marijuana can help patients suffering from it. This study concludes that medicinal marijuana has been found to be very helpful in treating PTSD.

Cannabis-PTSDMartin Lee, a researcher for Psychedelic Studies, has extensively studied the affects marijuana can have on the condition. Lee has found that those currently experiencing it have lower levels of a cannabinoid called anandamide. His findings are described in this study.
When these levels get low it can cause people to constantly relive the traumatic events, that are the basis for their condition. By using medical marijuana, patients have been found to sleep better. Other positive results include being able to function normally throughout the day and significant reduction in flashbacks.

Another study backed up those findings. The study said that cannabinoids found in marijuana can help patients sleep better by keeping nightmares at bay. And Science Daily also concluded that patients taking marijuana experienced a relief from many different symptoms, including nightmares.

These studies have been very helpful to those with the disorder. Which is why currently there are over 40,000 military members in the U.S, currently using marijuana as a coping mechanism. And as a medicine that helps like no other.

However, just like any other medication, finding the right kind is essential in helping patients get back to their normal lives.

Best Strains for PTSD

With thousands of marijuana strains out there, it can be difficult to know which  are the best marijuana strains for helping with PTSD. As marijuana strains can each have such a different effect on a patient, finding that right one is crucial. Here are the 5 best strains for treating PTSD and why they are so effective.

Blue Dream has always been known as one of those strains that will simply leave a person feeling happy. It’s also known that Blue Dream provides a feeling of total relaxation in the body and the slight CBD content can help relieve feelings of anxiety.

Cannatonic Marijuana strain for PTSDNot everyone taking marijuana for PTSD will want the psychoactive effects. For these patients, Cannatonic is a highly recommended strain. Cannatonic has a very high CBD content of 8 to 17 percent, and a low THC content of just 6 percent.
