How to Make Cannabis Gummies
Cannabis edibles are becoming more popular every day. Of all the delicious treats to choose from though, perhaps the most popular are cannabis gummies. Whether you shape them into cute little bears, or just leave them in small squishy balls, these candies have many things to offer. Although creating gummies at home may seem like a task too great to bear, it’s actually very simple. Plus, it’s pennies on the dollar from what you’d purchase at any dispensary.
What are the Effects of Infused Gummies?
One of the best things about cannabis gummies is that not only can you eat them whole, but you can also suck away slowly on them. This allows for sublingual absorption, meaning the cannabis will make it into your bloodstream in just minutes. That’s something that most edibles simply can’t say.
The effects kick in so quickly because there are so many mucosal membranes under the tongue and between the cheek and gum. As you suck on the candy, the cannabis is absorbed by the bloodstream. Typically after eating something infused with cannabis, it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour until the effects are felt.
Another benefit that cannabis gummies hold over other types of infused treats is that dosing is much easier. Usually, one or two gummies is plenty for a proper dose. Of course, everyone is different and so, a bit of experimenting is likely still needed.
Lastly, when you make your own candy at home, you know exactly what went into it. You don’t need any preservatives, additives, or artificial sugars that are unhealthy. Additionally, cannabis gummies can be difficult to find in stores and dispensaries. Many places have banned them due to the fact that they could be attractive to children. However, there are no laws against making them yourself at home.
Cannabis Gummies Recipe (Ingredients)
Just like any other cannabis treats, you need to first prepare the marijuana. If you don’t, eating the treats won’t produce any psychoactive effects. To prepare the cannabis, you must create a tincture that can be used in the candy. You don’t need too many ingredients for these cannabis extracts. Just some good quality marijuana, alcohol, and time will create a liquid you can use for weed gummies, or any other infused treat.
For this gummies recipe, you will need:
- 1 1/2 cups of fruit juice, it must be 100 percent juice
- 4 tablespoons of gelatin or vegan gelatin alternative
- 3 tablespoons of honey
- 3 to 4 teaspoons of the tincture, depending on how strong you’d like your gummies.
If you are making gummy bears, you will need a silicone mold. Even other shapes, such as worms or small balls, will need a mould of some sort. Otherwise, you will end up with one large gummy, which will make proper dosing more difficult.
Although optional, it can be fun to also purchase food colouring associated with the flavour you chose.
How to Make Cannabis Gummies (Method)
Once you have your tools and ingredients, it’s time to get started on actually making them. Fortunately, it’s very easy to do.
1.) Place your juice into a medium-sized saucepan. Warm over medium-low heat, but make sure it doesn’t come to a boil.
2.) After the juice has warmed through fully, add your tincture. Stir with a spoon.
3.) Using a whisk, slowly add the gelatin, whisking continuously until all of the gelatin is in the pot. Continue whisking until you no longer see grains of gelatin.
4.) Take a small taste of your mixture. Depending on the juice you are using, it may be sweet enough for you. If not, add the honey. Make sure you only add one tablespoon at a time so it doesn’t become too sweet for you.
5.) Add the food colouring, if using, and stir.
6.) Place each mould onto a baking sheet.
7.) Carefully pour the mixture into the silicone moulds. This is often easier, and cleaner, if you use a ladle. Simply ladle the mixture into the moulds, making sure you spill as little as possible.
8.) Cover the moulds with plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator. This is why you need the baking sheet underneath. That will ensure the mould is stable while transferring from your work area to the fridge before the gummies have set.
9.) Allow the gummy bears to set for three to four hours. You will know when they are ready if you gently press on one and you don’t break the surface.
10.) Gently push the cannabis gummies out of their moulds into a bowl.
11.) Eat one gummy and wait one hour. The length of time it takes to feel its effect will depend on how you consume it. If you chew one and eat it whole, it can take up to one hour for the effects to kick in. If you suck on it slowly, you will likely feel the effects within minutes. Either way, eating one and waiting awhile will help you determine the dosage of each gummy so you can be accurate in the future.
To store the gummies, place them in an airtight container and place them in the fridge. Sometimes, gummies stick together when they are placed into storage. To prevent this, you can sprinkle them with a bit of sugar. For the best results, potency, and flavour, you should consume the candy within two weeks of making them.
There are many different infused treats you can make with marijuana, but cannabis gummies are truly some of the most popular. It’s not hard to understand why either, with the many benefits these sweets bring with them. Although many are overwhelmed by the thought of making these sweets on their own, it’s very easy as long as you have the right ingredients and the right tools. After trying it just once, your imagination will take over and you can try with differently flavoured juices, strains, and even colours.
