Is Marijuana Good for the Skin?

It’s long been known that marijuana, particularly CBD oil, holds many benefits for anyone that uses it. It can be good for the mind and help treat, and in some instances, even cure certain ailments. But what is CBD, or CBD oil, and how can it help with other elements that we may just be discovering – such as our skin?

Can marijuana improve your skin?

Marijuana is made up of hundreds of cannabinoids. There are two that get the most attention – THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid that gives people that characteristic high that they tend to associate with marijuana. CBD on the other hand, does not contain any psychoactive ingredients but still works in the body to heal and treat conditions. In the past conditions such as anxiety, depression, and even Alzheimer’s have been treated with CBD. And now, research is showing that the CBD in marijuana can even be good for the skin.

CBD oil has been proven to help with aging, fine lines, and wrinkles due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties it has. And it’s not even anything that’s all that new.

The National Academy of Sciences published this study that found that CBD can be a more powerful antioxidant than both Vitamins E and C, which is a pretty amazing discovery. These antioxidants protect the skin by destroying free radicals, which are molecules in the body that can damage cells in a number of ways ranging from typical aging to cancer.

More recently, this study showed that cannabinoids such as CBD can destroy skin cancer cells. Marijuana activist Rick Simpson has also proven this in his own study. Already using CBD oil when a cancerous growth developed on his arm, he began applying the oil directly onto the growth and was stunned when it disappeared completely.

Skin cancer is of course, one of the most serious conditions CBD oil has been found to be useful in treating, but there are others as well. Eczema, rashes, dry skin, and psoriasis may all be better treated when CBD is applied to them. But one of the biggest skin conditions marijuana may treat is acne.

Those lipids control the dryness in the skin, or how moist it is. When topicals or CBD oil is applied, it can change the way these lipids are produced, which can have an effect on acne.

But, users that want to use marijuana to clear their skin have to be careful about it.

Benefits depend on how you use it

When using marijuana to clear the skin, it is most recommended that people choose topicals, vaporizers, or edibles to treat their skin condition. Not only can things like oils and topicals be applied directly to the location of the condition, and therefore be more effective, but smoking marijuana can bring unpleasant side effects that can actually hurt the health more than they can help it.

CBD-Topical-for-skinThis is because smoking anything can do a great deal of damage to overall health. Smoke contains carcinogens that in addition to causing lung cancer, can also cause wrinkles and lines in the skin and prematurely age it. In addition to this, the THC in marijuana can increase the male hormones, which can counteract the benefits of things like CBD oil and can actually cause acne rather than preventing it.

Topicals are the best way to treat acne and other skin conditions because as stated, they can be directly applied to the skin. But they also work instantly. Vaporizing CBD can take several minutes to work, while eating marijuana can not only contain THC, but also take much longer to work as the cannabinoids make their way into and through the bloodstream.

CBD has been proven to be very effective at combatting several health issues. And now we know that in addition to helping fight pain, treating conditions such as Alzheimer’s and anxiety disorders, it can also help treat acne, rashes, and other irritations and conditions of the skin.

It’s important however, that those that want to try it, know how to do it properly so they will get the results they’re looking for and not make an unpleasant condition worse.
