Working in the Weed Business

Cannabis is becoming legal, both medicinally and recreationally, in many areas of the world, with more considering making the change every day.And while this is good news for those that want to freely use their medication or just enjoy a smoke, it’s also good news for businesses, jobs, and the local economies marijuana is making its way to.

When it comes to the jobs the marijuana industry has created, the number of opbud cuttersportunities is practically endless. After just five months of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, Colorado had added 10,000 jobs – and that’s in less than six months!

According to Forbes, by the year 2020, the marijuana industry will have created more jobs in the United States than the manufacturing sector – which is huge for anyone wanting to capitalize on opportunity right now. When it comes to the jobs that are available, there are many and while they range in salary, many of them can be quite lucrative!

Edible creator

Making edibles is one area that can be very promising and quite lucrative for those who gain the required know-how to do it. Edibles go far beyond just pot brownies and today, edible creators offer everything from coffee to cough drops. And just like anyone in the food business, edible cannabis creators also sometimes have culinary specialities, such as gluten-free options.

Concentrate processor

The art of making concentrates is a dangerous one involving different gases and potentially, explosions. For this reason, people can turn a pretty profit processing concentrates, but it requires a great deal of knowledge before it can be attempted. People have lost their homes due to concentrate experiments gone wrong.

Glass producers and retailers

This is an industry that’s been around for a while, but cannabis consumers were never their outright target audience. As marijuana use becomes more common around the globe, you can expect to find more creators and sellers of bongs, pipes, vaporizers and more.

Courier

Marijuana dispensaries, pharmacies, cafes and clinics are going to soon be as commonplace as pizzerias are today. And just like pizzerias, many of them will offer delivery options (and already do in some areas of the world.) Bicycle couriers are thought to be the biggest coming trend.

Security

There are more security concerns revolving around cannabis dispensaries and clinics than almost any other industry. With many dispensaries refusing to keep their money in banks, round the clock security is needed in order to protect that money. And of course, the product itself also needs to be protected in times when the owner can’t be at the store watching over.

Reviewers

A dream job for many cannabis enthusiasts, reviewers will become more and more in demand as the marijuana industry continues to boom. These reviewers try different strains, but not with the purpose of getting high. Rather, they consider what strains would be best for what medical conditions, and how the different types of cannabis can work for different people.

Budtender

Budtenders are much like bartenders, but instead of knowing how to make drinks, they need to know how to match certain strains with certain conditions and ailments. Budtenders are the people you’ll see when you visit a dispensary, and they know just about everything there is about any strain they offer.

Trimmer

When cannabis is sold professionally, it needs to look good. That means the leaves and most of the stems need to be trimmed away to leave the customer with that perfectly dense bud. This is a harder job than many first think it to be, and being able to trim a bud professionally is really bringing a bud to its full potential. It’s an art, and takes some practice.

Administrative positions

Most stores need clerks, most pharmacies need front desk staff, and most online stores need people in their shipping and account information departments. These are all administrative positions the marijuana industry is currently hiring, and they’re only a few that are available. This is an area that’s going to grow extensively in the coming years, providing opportunities for even those that have little experience within the marijuana industry.

Retail owners

This is often the dream for many cannabis enthusiasts, and it can be extremely lucrative. However, there is a lot of organization and planning that goes into running a successful retail cannabis shop so those who are ambitious enough to do it must be willing to put in a lot of hard work.

Just like farmers are the backbone of the food we buy, pot farmers are the backbone of the marijuana consumers use. Growing marijuana can also be one of the most lucrative jobs in the marijuana industry, but it’s even more labor-intensive than running a retail shop. It also requires a lot of skill, knowledge, and can also be very expensive.

Breeders

Sometimes breeders are farmers and retail owners, but typically breeders like to focus on just that – breeding. They do this using two different strains and cross-breeding them to create an entirely new strain. This can emphasize the effects of two very good different strains, and give the breeders a chance to boast that they created something brand new. This is a job that can be a lot of fun, but also requires a lot of knowledge.

Setting up any kind of cannabis business is really not much different than setting up a business in any other industry. You’ll still need a business plan, budget, business structure, and the infrastructure to get your business up and running.

Of course, there are certain licenses that are needed in the cannabis industry that aren’t required in other industries, but these vary from area to area. Before starting a marijuana industry, the first thing to do is to check with the local authorities and ask what is legal, and what is needed before setting up a business. Once those have been obtained, the planning and setting up of the business can be done just as any other. Before long, you may find yourself as one of the many lucrative business owners in the marijuana industry!
